What makes Gordon Yates different?  I think it's people - plus simplicity of purpose and approach

When I first started in business, more than 30 years ago, I believed that an understanding of finance held the key. So I studied accountancy in the evenings for seven years. By the time I qualified however, I'd changed my mind. Finance is important, but it's people that hold the key to success in business.

In over 25 years now at Gordon Yates I've had no reason to change that belief, but lots of opportunity to discover (usually the hard way) that there's a lot more besides. Quality, simplicity, consistency, creativity, effective communication - these are the kind of things that make a difference too.

So, with these thoughts in mind, what is our purpose and guiding approach as a business?

• Our approach is to try always to see things from the perspective of our clients, candidates and colleagues.

We use the two statements to keep in step as a company. For us GY doesn't just stand for Gordon Yates. It also serves as a mnemonic for "Great people: Your perspective".

A Passion for Recruitment

In addition to these statements we also have some rallying cries which reflect and guide what we do. The one that you see in some of our advertising is: " A passion for recruitment". This comes from the real feeling for recruitment that exists within GY. We enjoy what we do and I hope it shows.

Our people are the business

Another (borrowed from a client long ago) is: "Our people are the business". It sums up what we feel about our superb candidates and it also describes our own team, who's warmth and openness visitors often comment on.

We work closely with the Guardian and relate to one of the slogans they once had: "Free thinkers welcome". Recruitment has seen mergers and acquisitions recently. At GY we value the freedom which 58 years of independence brings.
